Design Philosophy
I am pretty easy to work with, I don’t let my ego interfere with providing a design solution that satisfies the client’s needs and desires but I never hesitate to express my reasons for a different approach when I think the client hasn’t considered other options. That said, I prefer to design ‘new’ architecture so as to not be limited by differing preconceived ideas of what modern architecture is thought to be. I know that ‘new’ or ‘modern’ architecture isn’t for everyone so I am versatile enough to design whatever style one might desire and most of my residential work has been in Spanish / Mediterranean and other traditional period styles. With respect to additions, some don’t want it to look like an addition , some want a hybrid of existing style but with a more contemporary feel and others want something that radically expresses the idea that the addition is new and isn’t influenced by the existing structure. Sometimes a client wants to completely make over the style of the existing building which can work but it shouldn’t be forced. I have always incorporated ‘green’ design in my work. The only difference now is that there are more recycled and environmentally friendly construction products available but the incorporation of those products should not be confused with good, truly ‘green’ design. Good design needs to respect its environment as well as the client’s needs and architects creative expression.
